The Birman Cat is a stunning semi long haired breed of cat with colour point colouring. The breed through legend originates from Burma, South East Asia and in Burma the breed is sacred and has been for hundreds of years. Birmans were brought to France in the early twentieth century where breeding outside Asia started. This breed despite similar in colour to the Burmese are unique and are classed as a completely seperate breed. Birmans are steeped in history and legend and although their past maybe some what uncertain their beauty and character is clear for all to see.
The Birman cat is a stunning semi long haired cat with a thick dense coat that is soft to touch. This is a stocky semi large breed with a strong bone structure and are muscular in appearance. They have large heads with relatively small ears in comparison. Birmans are famous for their stunning rich blue eyes and colour point fur.
This breed only come in colour point. Birmans have a enzyme mutation which is why they have dark patches on their fur. This enzyme affects the melanin production in their body. The enzyme is affected by heat which means the hot parts of the cat i.e. the body are light in colour and the cool parts of the body i.e. tail, legs and head are dark in colour.
The Birman is a cat made to be with humans. They crave human attention and are known to be a lap cat. Birmans are an intelligent breed and like to play while at the same time are known to be docile. Birmans will normally get along well with the whole family even if that includes other cats or animals.
