The Modern Sphynx also known as the Canadian Hairless is one or the rarest breeds in the world, nevertheless need little introduction! The breed is unique to look at with its lack of fur coat and bald appearance. They originate from Canada where in the 1960’s a mutation in breeding caused a hairless kitten. This started the breed that is so famous today and known as the Sphynx Cat.

This is a medium sized breed with long legs. They have a triangular head with extremely large pointy ears and eyes that should be the same colour as the body. They are fine in bone structure but have strong powerful muscles. The breed doesn't have normal cat hair but does have a thin layer of vellus hair. Due to their lack of hair they do get cold and like to keep warm, resulting in them making great lap cats. This may be a hairless cat breed, but they do still produce the FelD1 protein in their saliva which causes most allergies. Therefore this is not a hypoallergenic cat breed.

This breed come in most known cat colours and markings. This includes plain, colour point, classic tabby and mackerel tabby.

This is a cat that craves the warmth, because of this they don’t make good outdoor cats and can become ill if left outside unsupervised. They will often sit next to radiators, fires or find warmth against you in your own bed. This breed make a fantastic house cat that crave human attention with a desire to set up camp on your lap. They are intelligent, curious and have high levels or energy therefore it is important that they are both physically and mentally stimulated often.

Health Issues

This breed in general is a healthy cat but was created from a very small gene pool (a result of mother/son breeding ). Such intense inter breeding has caused some known health problems and it is imperative that a kitten is adopted from a responsible breeder who is helping eradicate these issues. The breed can suffer from a genetic disorder called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, this is a disease that affects the muscles of the heart and can be fatal. Their lack of fur can also make them prone to skin cancer if exposed to excessive natural sunlight. This must be taken into account if you allow your cat outdoors for a walk.

The Sphynx is a special breed that is known for its unique appearance and extroverted behaviour. They are a cat that requires looking after and their coat does need to be maintained. They can build up excessive body oils on the skin which would normally be absorbed by the hair. Due to this regular bathing is still needed. It is also important for this breed to have constant access to warmth as they do get cold easy. This breed can be prone to hissing and don’t always bond with everyone so it is recommended they are socialised well as a kitten. They eat a lot of food in comparison to their size therefore it is important that their weight is monitored as they are prone to obesity normally due to a lack of exercise. Both mental and physical stimulation is required for this breed which has intelligence in abundance and large energy levels.

A very special cat!
